The second team started their outdoor season with a game in Geneva against Black Boys. After our great preseason weekend in Böblingen, we were all really positive and optimistic. Jens, our coach, was unfortunately missing, but Pat was playing coach together with Maurice as captain took the challenge to guide the team through this first game.
The start was not ideal with three young players joining last minute and slightly lazy warm-up but we planned to be ready from the beginning. Theory and practice is not always the same. We were not dangerous at all in the first quarter but managed to keep the score at 0:0. In the second quarter we were surprised by a long aerial where we could only stop the attacker with a foul. The consequence was a stroke that they converted. Only a few minutes after that they scored their second goal. After this shock we woke up and started to play better. We managed to convert a short corner where Philipp as the injector managed to deflect a backhand shot from Maurice – Philipp’s first goal for the second team! Halftime score was 2:1 for Black Boys.
Pat and Maurice managed to motivate us more and get us into a fighting mode. We won more one against one situations and used the width of the pitch much better. Not too long into the third quarter we again got a short corner and Crispin converted it nicely through the legs of the goalkeeper. We continued to put pressure on Black Boys and therefore it was not a surprise that we managed to score another goal in the last quarter after a very nice counter attack. Pat entered the circle with a nice acceleration and shot our third goal – also his first goal for the second team!. We managed to turn the game around but there was still about 7 minutes to play. Black Boys increased their pressure again and they had two more short corners but out of five or six short corners in total they didn’t manage to score a goal. Flo saved the score because of a fantastic save about 2 minutes before the end. We managed to secure the win – a fantastic start to the season! Nevertheless there are still a lot of things we can improve, there is additional work to do, but the motivation will not be an issue for now!
Players for GC on this Sunday were:
