GC Herren 1: Final Game, more points

Black Boys Hockey Club - Grasshopper Club Zürich  --- 1:4

On the last game before the indoor break GC went to Geneva to play BlackBoys. An opponent that was convincingly beat last time with 6:0 but by no way would be an easy win. The last game showed a lot of intensity, and only by tactical tweaking and continued pace we were able to build up the score. That same intensity we were expecting today as well, added to this GC was worn thin through injury and BlackBoys having a good performance against Servette.

Either way, 3 points were a clear goal that would improve our stable position as 2nd in the leaderboard. After some tackling adjusting and a good teamtalk we were ready to get those points home.

The first quarter started intensively. Both teams were getting circle entries but GC was controlling more of the game. However we were not able to score. In the second quarter we were able to press more and finally get a good combination into the circle that was deflected by the keeper but our newly appointed forward Pascal pushed the ball over the line at the second post. 1:0 and shortly after, the halftime sounded.

For the next half we pushed more and further increased the intensity. We were rewarded with some short corners and after some Fabio was able to slot it into the net….only for the goal to be disallowed, because of an early injection, apparently. No problem for Fabio, stepped up again, other side of the keeper, 2:0. We kept at it, more corners followed, where we switched and put a ball on a deflector, which was stopped on the line by a BlackBoys body. A 7m followed just at the blow of the whistle for the end of the quarter. That Fabio put it in is more or less just a formality at this point. 3:0.

Though it might have been clear by now who would take home the points, we wanted to keep the pace and increase our score in the last quarter.

So the team said, so Artur did. 42.5 seconds after the restart Artur rolled the ball over the baseline and with some artracadabra put the ball through the approaching keeper. 4:0. For the final minutes, we lost some focus and conceded a shortcorner that BlackBoys was able to put into the net after a series of tries. While this upped the spirit of the home team and crowd, it did nothing for the further score. GC was able to deal with the pressure and finish the game.

We end the first half of the outdoor season with 21 points and a strong 2nd place. We will now enjoy our week off and then get straight into a packed indoor season.

We would like to thank all the supporters. We will be in action again on the 17th of march 2024 in Zürich against Servette.
