GC Herren 1: Big win against Lugano

Grasshopper Club Zürich - Hockey Athletic Club Lugano --- 9:0

On a cloudy Sunday afternoon, the GC first team were meeting HAC Lugano at the home ground in Zurich. After the important victory last week against our direct rivals Servette, the goal was to continue in winning ways and improve our goal difference. Against Lugano we knew that our chances were good, as the team had just been promoted. Additionally, one of the away team’s car broke down on the long trip to Zurich and the team had to start the game a man less on the field.

Scoring early was one of the goals the team went into the game with, and it didn’t take long until the ball hit the backboard for the first time. Artur von Ruffer opened his scoresheet after a ball across the goal by David Roegiers. After the opening it took a while until the celebrations broke out again. Shortly before the end of the first quarter, Lukas Gebhard was found at the long post, who didn’t hesitate to finish with a backhand push passed the keeper.

In the second quarter the game struggled a lot, as GC couldn’t connect in the circle and finish their chances, and Lugano’s form of attacks were mostly aerials into the GC defenders sticks. Finally Lucas Harte managed to convert a penalty corner beautifully and sending GC with a 3:0 lead to halftime.

Lugano started to struggle more and more as they didn’t have any substitutions and were one less during the whole game. It opened up the game for GC, who started to feed the keeper with shots and deflections. It was once again Artur von Ruffer who came up clutch and managed to find the net two times in a short period, with his Thomas Mülleresque positioning and finishing.

The last quarter was only heading in one direction and there was no end in sight for Lugano. Next on the scoresheet was Hein van der Weide who was clinical after a beautiful play in combination with Fabio Landtwing and Lars Bamberg. Both Fabio Landtwing and Lars Bamberg had the chance to score from the spot, as in both cases a defender blocked the ball with his body on the line. Both managed to score and it was now 8:0. The last stroke of the game once again belonged to Artur von Ruffer, who was found at the far post with a sliding deflection, sending the ball into the roof of the net.

The final score was 9:0 and although that is a good result and even more important three points, there were many chances that were not converted. Including a spectacular tomahawk which, although very impressive, might have been the wrong option to finish the attack, instead of outplaying the 5 vs 1 situation against the keeper. But this is were the opinions differ…

Thank you once again to the great fans who showed up in large numbers and powered the team throughout the game.
