GC Herren 1: Basel Beaten but Grasshoppers Below Best

Grasshopper Club Zürich - Basler HC--- 2:0

Grasshoppers secured their first points of the season following last week’s hard fought but disappointing 2:3 loss to Lucerne.

A lively and rambunctious home crowd cheered on the home victory with goals coming from Benjamin Eddy and Lars Bamberg either side of half-time. The Zurich side started brightly and could have been in front in the opening minutes when Oliver Haberthür’s early strike glanced off the Basel goalkeeper for a corner, the home side wasted several more chances until Benjamin Eddy rifled home for the first of GC’s goals.

The second half saw a continuing theme with Grasshoppers backline keeping any Basel threat at bay but wasting chances up front. Lukas Müller created one of the better chances with his usual spark of individual skill but saw his reverse strike go over the bar. GC did find their second when Lukas Hegner played in Lars Bamberg who calmly slotted home against his old team.

The result and most notably the points are very welcome but future performances will need to improve should Grasshoppers wish to push onto bigger and better things.
