GC Damen: Loss against Basler HC

GC travelled to Basel this Sunday. The game was setup to be a hard fought match with both teams still searching for their first points in the league this season. GC were also seeking revenge for their Swiss Cup defeat in September.

GC looked sharp from the start with a break down the right wing in the opening minutes. Basel hit back immediately and a miscommunication in the GC defence, meant that Basel were 1:0 up within the first 5 minutes. They doubled their lead a few minutes later with a similar attack; the right forward scored from an unmarked position.

The second half continued as the first had ended, with GC battling against a determined Basel side. A third Basel goal made its way over the line and it was looking increasingly like it was going to be a difficult day at the office for GC.

The home fans were treated, at least twice, to a classic, full-length diving tackle from Tanja, who was a tenacious force in the middle of the field for the whole game.

GC continued to carve out more opportunities on the break. Julia had two shots on the right hand side of the goal which went agonisingly wide. The shots came after break through the middle of the pitch and good link up play between the forwards.

The defence fought hard as ever with the one aim of man-marking the Basel players to make life difficult for the opposition. When under pressure, Basel were prone to make mistakes and GC were able to use these mistakes to put them under more pressure. Late in the late quarter, Basel won themselves a short corner and managed to convert a superb shot which looped over Jose’s stick and into the top right hand corner.

The game finished 4:0. GC once again showed improvements. The difference in performance between the Swiss Cup game and this game were clear. The team are focused on beating Basel next spring.

Welcome to Lotte, who played her first game today for GC.
