GC Damen: 0:2 Defeat against Olten

GC were looking to christen their new green kit with a win and from the start it looked promising. GC looked sharp and determined from the off and matched their opponents in every area of the field. Possession was shared equally between the two teams in the first half.

At the end of the first quarter, Olten gained a short corner. The ball was played out to the waiting player top of the D and the resulting shot was picked out of the air by Jose. Shortly after, on a quick counter-attack, Inga collected the ball in the midfield and picked out Tanja perfectly upfront, whose gravity-defying diving shot went agonizingly wide.

The remainder of the half was hard fought with both teams having opportunities on goal. Jose was easily the busier of the two keepers and pulled off some impressive saves to keep GC in the game and the Olten forwards wondering what they would need to do to get a shot past her. At half-time the score as 0-0.

The current league leaders were becoming frustrated with GC's defensive play and sharp passing in the midfield, with the game becoming increasingly physical as time ticked on. Luntu worked hard in midfield to create space and opportunities, which was made difficult by the opposition swarming round her every time she took possession of the ball.

Olten counter-attacked and quickly moved the ball down the left wing and into the D. The ball was crossed back diagonally from the front post and the waiting Olten attacker, tapped the ball into the goal.

GC still had time to look for an equalizer and maybe even a winner but the link-up play between midfield and attack wasn’t as successful as the oppositions and the amount of chances that Olten were creating in the second half was much greater than GC.

A second goal for Olten came five minutes from the end. The goal was a carbon copy of their first but this time with the play down the right hand side.

All in all, an improved performance against the league leaders which was made all the more interesting by some umpiring decisions that raised a few eyebrows!
