After Swiss Cup game the previous day against RW Wettingen with only 10 players in the squad, there were several tired legs in the GC squad. Despite this, the whole team was determined to win the first points of the 2016/17 season.
GC started the game aggressively and had some dangerous attacks early on in the game. Tettje and Clara linked up well the right hand side of the pitch and Charly worked hard in the centre of the pitch to distribute the ball into spaces. Overall, in the first quarter, the possession was equal between the two teams, with Servette also having some good attacking play.
In the second quarter, Servette increasingly put GC under pressure and the defense worked hard, as in previous matches, to stop the opponents gaining an advantage but a slight miscommunication within the defense meant that one player was unmarked in the D and was able to slot the ball passed Josi from close range.
At half time, we knew that we could easily get back into the game. Three minutes into the second half, GC were awarded the first PC of the game. The ball was hit to Tettje at the top of the D, who fiercely struck the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal, giving the Servette goalie no chance of making a save.
Back on level terms, GC began to play with a new-found sense of confidence. Claudia was passed the ball deep into the Servette half and drove forward and shot at goal from an impossible angle. The shot missed all the defending sticks and the goalkeeper to hit the right hand post and rebound into the goal to put GC 2-1 ahead.
The GC defense held strong as Servette players were looking for an opportunity to gain the equalizer. But GC quickly counter-attacked with some excellent passing down the right and won a penalty corner. Claudia injected the ball to Charly, who passed it back to the injector. The initial shot from Claudia was saved by the goalie but the rebound fell to Virginia, who smashed the ball over the line.
Congratulations to the whole team for superb performance and the first 3 points of the season. A special mention goes to Clara and Katha, who both played their first matches for GC and to Josi who played outfield for the first time in the game on Saturday against RWW.
Thanks to all of our supporters who came support us and to Lukas for coaching straight after playing in victorious Men’s team. Hopp GC!
